The Board of County Commissioners have passed a balanced budget for 2023. Commissioners anticipate using $3.7 million from general reserves next year to balance the budget.

Departments anticipate expenses of $51.5 million next year, with revenues projected to be about $47.7 million. Of the $3.7 million in general reserves that may be used to balance the 2023 budget, $3.2 million is carried forward from the last two years.

“Getting to a balanced budget this year was an accomplishment for not only the board but also our departments and elected offices,” Commissioner Kevin Overbay said. “No department was untouched by budget cuts this year. In the future, economic development will play an important role in increasing revenues for the county.”

Most cuts in the budget were made in eliminating unfilled positions. Nine positions from the general fund will not be filled next year, said Cathy Mulhall, county administrator. Other cuts came in internal expenses, such as supplies and training.

Chelan County will start the new year with a fund balance of $13.5 million.
