East Wenatchee reached a deal with Douglas County to create and manage an emergency program when natural or manmade disasters happen.
The arrangement will pay Douglas County approximately $41,000, run by a sergeant with the county’s Sheriff’s Office, 560 KPQ news radio reported in December.
If East Wenatchee were to execute a program from within, it would have to hire a full-time employee.
“Chelan County does the City of Wenatchee’s emergency management plan for them,” East Wenatchee Mayor Jerrilea Crawford said, 560 KPQ reported. “So we basically used, almost verbatim, the same language and services that they do because it would be exactly the same.”
Crawford said that the emergency management system would be difficult for the Sheriff’s Office in the first year, KPQ reported. She said the Sheriff’s Office would have to develop the plan as they implement it. According to officials, it will take at least 12 months to get the bugs worked out.
